A mere century ago, infectious diseases were the main cause of death worldwide, even in the most developed countries. Today with the exception of clean drinking water, nothing rivals vaccination in fighting infectious diseases and keeping mortality rates low. The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates immunization saves between two to three million lives across the globe every year. Beyond vaccines’ efficacy, disease prevention is the most cost-effective public health intervention available.

At Sanofi, we believe civil society initiatives in favor of vaccination are crucial in fighting disease.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 8,5% of adults 18 years and older worldwide were living with diabetes in 2014. What’s more, the disease was responsible for some 1.6 million deaths in 20151. Type 2 diabetes accounts for 90% of cases worldwide. This translates into over 422 million diabetics across the globe.
Sanofi is committed to working to address the diabetes public health concern worldwide through its integrated treatments and medical devices.

Sanofi has invested more than €1 billion over 10 years in its largest industrial complex in the world just outside Frankfurt, Germany. Moreover, it recently inaugurated a €75 million high-tech building designed to produce a new type of insulin to treat around 6 million patients.

Cardiovascular diseases
According to the World Health Organization (WHO) cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) are the leading cause of death worldwide. Cardiovascular diseases are a group of disorders of the heart and blood vessels.  An estimated 17.7 million people died from cardiovascular diseases in 2015 alone, equating to roughly one-third of all global deaths.

That cancer is a leading killer worldwide is beyond a doubt: according to the World Health Organization (WHO), in 2012 there were roughly 14.0 million new cases. Cancer is the second leading cause of death globally, and was responsible for 8.8 million deaths in 2015. More worrying yet is the number of new cases is expected to rise by about 70% over the next two decades.

Rare diseases
The quality of life of a patient living with a rare disease may be severely limited due to loss of autonomy and the progressive, debilitating aspects of the disease. The rarity and complexity of patients’ medical conditions can make a rare disease difficult to diagnose and treat, leaving patients feeling isolated. Fortunately, thanks to innovations in biotechnology there are an increasing number of targeted therapeutic treatments available.

As a pioneer and leader in enzyme replacement therapies, Sanofi Genzyme is committed to finding new therapeutic solutions for patients who may have no other alternatives. We pioneered the first enzyme replacement therapy to treat Gaucher disease in 1984, transforming the lives of patients and at the same time setting the standard for treating the condition.

Multiple sclerosis
One of the major challenges multiple sclerosis (MS) poses is the simple fact that it is not well understood. It is thought to be the result of a genetic predisposition combined with an environmental or viral factor. As there are no specific tests for MS, diagnosis can only be made after evaluating damage to the central nervous system and ruling out other possibilities.

Sanofi has worked for over a decade to develop new treatments for MS, establishing itself as a leader in providing therapies for the disorder, with two marketed products and several products under development.
